I was thinking in the shower this morning that it’s a miracle that the entire international community could agree to a standard time system. I mean, everyone uses seconds, minutes, and hours to measure time. Granted, it’s based on scientific knowledge, but still…if they tried to establish a system nowadays, it might not have been so easy. I think it might have gone something like this:
The French PM announced today that in spite of political pressure from the other bodies of the European Union, they were not going to give in and adapt to other time standards, believing that “Our culture and our time is best.” Germany’s Chancellor, weary of any similarity to pre-WWII attitudes, announced that they were going to adopt the standards of the smallest European country, Luxembourg, to show their support. Luxembourg unfortunately has yet to establish a system, claiming that “no one cares what we think.”
The US government announced its plan to “stop any effort by the axis of evil” to establish a “terrorist time system.” To support its mission, the President plans to add another 21,000 minutes to its current system. He also hopes to open more McDonald’s and Starbucks restaurants in the Muslim world, operating solely on the US time system. The Japanese government is scheduled to start its new system today, whereby they will try to fit 7 days of work into one day. Finally, the Chinese government plans to create a “dual-clock” approach. One clock is for the males in the country and follows a fairly traditional format. The other clock is for females, which operates more as a countdown clock if there are too many females in their country.
