On Monday and Tuesday, I attended the DMA’s conference on copywriting. No, the conference had nothing to do with copyrights; instead, the idea behind the conference was to enhance the attendee’s ability to write good, convincing copy for letters, brochures, websites, and emails.
Some of the big points I took away from the conference:
- Always talk about how the product or service that you are advertising has a direct impact on the person to whom you’re talking. No one cares how long you’ve been around or why you are so great (well, some people care, but that doesn’t mean it’s good copy)–they want to know how your product helps their lives.
- You don’t want to focus on selling products or information, you want to focus on building relationships.
- You want to utilize good vocabulary and employ the clever use of words when possible, but also avoid being too verbose.
